"Long Ways To Travel"

Takes a rockin' chair to rock
a rubber ball to roll
a hard-headed woman, lord
to satisfy my soul

I got a long ways to travel
long ways to travel
got a long ways to travel, lord
before I ever get home

(Woody Guthrie)

In the summer of 2000 my wife Kate and I drove across the country, from Princeton, NJ to Portland, OR where we were going to live for a year, then we drove back. My plan was to write a travel narrative of our "adventures." I worked on it quite extensively back in 2000 and 2001-- we were moving back into a new place in Princeton after the year in Portland when Sept. 11 happened--but work on my Ph.D. dissertation and new teaching duties required me to put it on hiatus.

Enter the age of the blog. I've decided that I will post the travel narrative on a blog so that it gets instant, easy, free, and paperless publication. I don't know how long it will take but as I get the pieces in order I will post them for the world to read....
